Protect & Manage Crypto — guided setup and best practices

Setup — Step by Step

1

Unbox & Confirm authenticity

Inspect packaging and tamper-evident stickers. If anything looks off, contact the vendor. Ledger ships genuine devices only from authorized channels.

2

Install Ledger Live

Download the Ledger Live app for your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux) from the official site. Ledger Live is the management app that connects to your device for installations, updates and portfolio monitoring.

3

Initialize the device

When you power the Ledger, choose to create a new wallet. The device will generate a recovery phrase (usually 24 words). Write these words on the provided recovery sheet — never store them digitally.

4

Set a PIN

Pick a PIN that is memorable but not guessable. The PIN blocks local access; combine it with the recovery phrase for full account recovery.

5

Install Apps & Add Accounts

Use Ledger Live Manager to install the necessary coin apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and add accounts. For some tokens, you may need to use third-party integrations (e.g., MetaMask) — always follow Ledger's guidance.

6

Test with small transaction

Before moving large balances, send a small amount in and out to confirm address validation, transaction fees, and correct account mapping.

Why verify addresses on-device?

Only the hardware device shows the true address that will be used on the blockchain. Malware on your computer can display a different address on-screen. Confirming on-device prevents funds from being redirected.

Recovery phrase & backups

Ledger uses a mnemonic seed (BIP39/BIP44 compatible) — once written and secured offline, the seed allows you to recover your accounts on a new device. Consider using metal backup solutions for long-term durability.

Security Best Practices

  • Official Sources Only: Download software exclusively from ledger.com and verify checksums when available.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep the device firmware current; updates include security improvements. Always update using Ledger Live.
  • Phishing Awareness: Never click links claiming to recover seeds or promise free crypto. Reputable services will never ask for your recovery phrase.
  • Multiple Backups: Store the recovery phrase in more than one secure physical location to mitigate single-point failures.
  • Use Passphrase for Extra Privacy: An optional passphrase creates a hidden wallet; however, if you forget it, funds become unrecoverable.

Advanced Tips

Consider using a dedicated, offline computer for large operations, and hardware-encrypt backups where possible. If you manage institutional funds, use Multi-signature (multi-sig) setups and dedicated HSM/MPC products alongside hardware wallets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover if I lose my Ledger?
Yes — with your recovery phrase you can restore accounts to another Ledger device or compatible wallet that accepts the same seed standard.
Is Ledger compatible with mobile?
Ledger Live has mobile apps for iOS and Android that connect via Bluetooth to select Ledger models for on-the-go management.
What happens if my recovery phrase is exposed?
If your recovery phrase is exposed, move funds to a new wallet with a new seed immediately. Treat exposure as a full compromise.
